History
For over a century, the Grand Hotel Menaggio has preserved the history of international tourism on Lake Como, dating back to the era when this shore of the lake began to captivate Europe. The building was born as an elegant villa in the second half of the 19th century, in the very years when Menaggio began to win over the European aristocracy and upper middle class, the English in particular. This was thanks to the mild climate, breathtaking views, and convenient, frequent lake connections, which made this corner of Lombardy an essential stop for travelers of the time.
Built directly on the lakefront, with an unrivaled view of Bellagio, the hotel has carried the distinctive traits of the great Belle Époque hotels since its very beginning: spacious, bright rooms, terraces overlooking the water, and spaces designed to welcome a demanding international clientele. For more than a hundred years, the hotel has hosted travelers from all over Europe, becoming a cornerstone of hospitality on the lake and helping, alongside other historic establishments from the same period, to build Menaggio's reputation as one of Lake Como's most renowned destinations.
Over time, the building has been renovated several times, always with the aim of combining the comforts demanded by today's travelers with the charm of its origins. In 2025, a major restoration project was completed, followed more recently by efficiency upgrades and roof renovation works, all carried out with the utmost care for the property's architectural value.
Today, the Grand Hotel Menaggio continues to preserve the spirit of the great 19th-century hotels, offering its guests not only a charming stay on the lake, but also a living piece of its history.
